So this is the year of Sanderson。And it starts with Tress of the Emerald Sea。When I first read about his secret novels, i actually didn't think it would be full length novels。 This was a 400 page EPUB book。 Can you imagine getting 3 more of these throughout the year?? This year is going to be epic。Tress of the Emerald Sea happens on one of the planets of the Cosmere which was not discussed before。 So it's a brand new planet which has a total of bloody 12 moons。 All these 12 moons shed aether which falls on the planet's surface and becomes their seas。 No, this is not the birth planet of the aethers。 This is just one of those planets where aether is。 So deadly aethers, 12 moons and seas and one common, unassuming girl who fell in love with a prince。Is this a love story, you ask?Well it very well could be。 Tress of the Emerald Sea is a whimsical tale of love, friendship, hardship, loyalty and adventure。 More than that, it is a testament to the curious ones that adventure is just around the corner, if you're curious enough to look for it。Far different from any of the other Cosmere novels in terms of language and tone, this has YA written all over it。 If you liked Nona the Ninth, you'll probably fit right in with this one。 Think Princess Diaries but with swashbuckling pirates and one of our favourite worldhopper。 Yes, Hoid is very much here and this is in fact, his story to tell。 As far as hints about the Cosmere goes, nah there isn't much。 But forget all that。 This is a beautiful story that you must read。 Even if you read none of Sanderson's books before。 。。。more

I LOVED THIS 🥰🥰🥰 I'M SO HAPPY TO BE READING BRANDON SANDERSON AGAIN!!! And this was such a whimsical, cozy read! I wish there was more in this world! Loved this!! Sanderson is easily becoming one of my favorite authors。 As a life-long lover of The Princess Bride, I love that this story was inspired by that one, but switching it up and giving the girl the leading role。 It’s a whimsical adventure story with dangers and laughs。 It explores the Cosmere more and Hoid/Wit is one of my favorite characters in the Stormlight Archive so I love that we get to see more of who he is。

Absolutely fantastic。 The narration really reminds me of the Kingkiller chronicles。

Very good! I threw my money at Sanderson as soon as he announced these books, and I do not regret it。 There is a little bit less magic than I was hoping for, but if the book had been much longer, I think it would have felt like it was dragging。 It's a cosmere novel, just read it。 Very good! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Starting the year off strong with Brandon Sanderson's first secret project。 This book was unlike any Sanderson book so far, told in a whimsical voice that made it feel like a fairytale。 The whole book was delightful。 I especially loved seeing the Character changes and growth in Tress, but I really enjoyed the secondary characters arcs as well。 The original illustrations were lovely, of course。 Can't wait to get my physical copy so I can see them in print。 I saw the twist coming (you know the one Starting the year off strong with Brandon Sanderson's first secret project。 This book was unlike any Sanderson book so far, told in a whimsical voice that made it feel like a fairytale。 The whole book was delightful。 I especially loved seeing the Character changes and growth in Tress, but I really enjoyed the secondary characters arcs as well。 The original illustrations were lovely, of course。 Can't wait to get my physical copy so I can see them in print。 I saw the twist coming (you know the one) and my husband, who is not yet halfway through the book, has figured it out as well, but I don't feel like that detracted from the story。 。。。more

4。75-ish stars This was so fun and unlike other cosmere books I've read。 I really appreciated hoid's narration haha, it made me actually (no hyperbole) laugh out loud at points:))Tress was a fun and resourceful heroine。 I liked her a lot Yipee。 Charlie was a bit of a wet sock (I didn't care for him all that much and Tress liking him so much made me question reality idk (still, I could suspend my disbelief enough, so it didn't really hinder my experience of the story)The crew was great especially 4。75-ish stars This was so fun and unlike other cosmere books I've read。 I really appreciated hoid's narration haha, it made me actually (no hyperbole) laugh out loud at points:))Tress was a fun and resourceful heroine。 I liked her a lot Yipee。 Charlie was a bit of a wet sock (I didn't care for him all that much and Tress liking him so much made me question reality idk (still, I could suspend my disbelief enough, so it didn't really hinder my experience of the story)The crew was great especially Fort and Salay, whom I enjoyed reading about very much 。。。more

This was a really fun, short novel。 A bit of a romantic adventure, but with classic Sanderson world-building and quirky characters。 You can certainly see some of the covid influences, from the fear of airborne spores to tablet communication devices。 The plot is straightforward and told in an interesting style with a whimsical narrator that talks to the reader and frequently drops fascinating Cosmere links or foreshadows story events。 Overall this was a good book and a great start to the year of This was a really fun, short novel。 A bit of a romantic adventure, but with classic Sanderson world-building and quirky characters。 You can certainly see some of the covid influences, from the fear of airborne spores to tablet communication devices。 The plot is straightforward and told in an interesting style with a whimsical narrator that talks to the reader and frequently drops fascinating Cosmere links or foreshadows story events。 Overall this was a good book and a great start to the year of Sanderson。For a full review, check out my blog: https://strakul。blogspot。com/2023/01/。。。 。。。more

My first Sanderson, and I can see why he is so popular。 The story is inspiring and beautiful in equal measure and kept pulling me back for one more reading session。

3。5 starsThis book is unexpectedly really funny at times! Unfortunately it also seems a bit more YA-ish than I would like, though Sanderson bills this as a grown-up fairy tale in the postscript。 On the other hand, this is a book narrated by Hoid which I absolutely enjoyed。 The world building is pretty unique and interesting, while still fitting into the greater Cosmere。 So all in all, rounding this up to 4 stars and looking forward to the next “secret project” from Sanderson’s Kickstarter。

This book was a joy to read! Sanderson said that one inspiration for the book was the question, “What would have happened if Buttercup (from the Princess Bride) had gone to save Wesley when he was captured by pirates?” To me, the vibe was The Princess Bride meets Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy。

Rachelle

This was obnoxiously adorable and I loved every single second of it。

Incredible world, magic, characters, narrative, Cosmere insights and narration。 And just about everything else and in between。Similar to The Lost Metal in how Sanderson is really trying to tackle real-world issues, in this case including mental health, emotional growth and the difficulty of changing someone's perspective。 Sadly also similar in there being (zero?) queer characters。 Step it up my guy! ⭐4。5/5 Stars⭐Loved this book! The latest Cosmere books in Lost Metal and Rhythm of War were underwhelming for me。 In Tress, Brandon has once again complete creative freedom, no deadlines, and his genius story writing just blossoms and it's just soo good! This book is awesome from start to finish! Loved the magic system, and even though the story is a bit too light hearted for my normal taste, it just works really well!Cannot wait for sequels on this world! Very Witty。 Some fun nonsense on a ship that had some stupid people involved and a twist on the damsel in distress trope。

This book rocketed to my top favorite books (I don’t necessarily have a real numbered list but I know this is one of my favorites) and definitely easily a favorite Sanderson book。 It’s absolutely delightful。 It’s got lots of good messages。 Plenty of funny parts but also insightful thought provoking quips。 Highly recommend this book。 I can’t wait to see the physical copy as I read the ebook and listened some to the audiobook。 I know the physical book will be stunning。 I definitely do not regret b This book rocketed to my top favorite books (I don’t necessarily have a real numbered list but I know this is one of my favorites) and definitely easily a favorite Sanderson book。 It’s absolutely delightful。 It’s got lots of good messages。 Plenty of funny parts but also insightful thought provoking quips。 Highly recommend this book。 I can’t wait to see the physical copy as I read the ebook and listened some to the audiobook。 I know the physical book will be stunning。 I definitely do not regret backing this project on kickstarter。 One of the best uses of money ever。 。。。more

I'm sorry this one really isn't for me, glad for everyone else that I have the unpopular opinion。 Going into this blind was not good as there are few YA books I like, in fact I've been avoiding the category。 I'm also not fond on romance, or nautical or "humour," all that being said I really enjoyed the unusual magic system and the fact that it was a quick read。 I'm sorry this one really isn't for me, glad for everyone else that I have the unpopular opinion。 Going into this blind was not good as there are few YA books I like, in fact I've been avoiding the category。 I'm also not fond on romance, or nautical or "humour," all that being said I really enjoyed the unusual magic system and the fact that it was a quick read。 。。。more

Really a fun read and a wild start to this "year of Sanderson。" Its clear that at this point Brandon is fully unbound by being coy with the diversity of ideas and concepts in the Cosmere hes created over the last two decades and it honestly works far better than I expected in this novel, unlike in The Lost Metal。 You can feel how much fun was had writing this book and having Hoid as the narrator was a nice departure from the typical 3rd-person removed POVs from other Cosmere books。 Really excite Really a fun read and a wild start to this "year of Sanderson。" Its clear that at this point Brandon is fully unbound by being coy with the diversity of ideas and concepts in the Cosmere hes created over the last two decades and it honestly works far better than I expected in this novel, unlike in The Lost Metal。 You can feel how much fun was had writing this book and having Hoid as the narrator was a nice departure from the typical 3rd-person removed POVs from other Cosmere books。 Really excited for the other books coming this year。 。。。more

Wonderful short novel with plenty of inside jokes to keep readers of Brandon's other work entertained and questioning。 Very glad to finally have a book in Hood's voice he is by far one of my favourite characters。 Wonderful short novel with plenty of inside jokes to keep readers of Brandon's other work entertained and questioning。 Very glad to finally have a book in Hood's voice he is by far one of my favourite characters。 。。。more

I absolutely loved this! It was very different from most of Sanderson's cosmere work, an adventure story that felt in the vein of Treasure Island and other classics。 That being said, this is very much a book for fans。 There are tons of Easter eggs and references that won't make much sense if you haven't read all the other Cosmere books that are out。 So keep that in mind if you're new to Sanderson, but either way this is a really fun easy read that lived up to the hype!! Quite possibly one of my favorite Sandersons to date (Ok, Bands of Mourning beats it)。 But it’s so unique in the Sanderson universe and ridiculously adorable。 And no heart wrenching deaths tragically beautiful deaths!

Joleen (starlightbooktales)

Absolutely one of my favorite books!

I loved this novel and especially the feeling it gave me。 It was so fun to read a book in Hoid's voice and to see the cosmere from his perspective。 It was delightful to read and the tone was great。 It was like a fairytale for grown-ups in bits but still with the cosmere elements and Brandon Sanderson's writing style。 I loved this novel and especially the feeling it gave me。 It was so fun to read a book in Hoid's voice and to see the cosmere from his perspective。 It was delightful to read and the tone was great。 It was like a fairytale for grown-ups in bits but still with the cosmere elements and Brandon Sanderson's writing style。 。。。more
